Santa Monica, California –
Job seekers, as well as anyone contemplating a job change, will be heading to
the Santa Monica Public Library on Thursday, October 29, 2009, at 7:00 p.m.,
for a presentation by employment expert Ellen Gordon Reeves in the Main
Library’s Multipurpose Room, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.
Ellen Gordon Reeves, the resident job hunting expert at the Columbia School of
Journalism and author of the irreverent employment guide, Can I Wear My Nose
Ring to the Interview?, will present this free interactive seminar designed
to help job hunters achieve success. Whether you’re a nose ring wearer or
not, come for a session on the dos and don’ts of what to wear, what to bring,
what to say and how to say it when you’re heading to a job interview or looking
for an internship, summer job/grant, or volunteer position. Reeves will talk
about how to look for and land the job you want: how to tailor resumes and
cover letters, network effectively using the resources easily available to you,
what to wear to the interview, what to do in the waiting room, how NOT to shake
hands, how to answer classic interview questions, negotiate salary and benefits
and more. If you already have a job, she’ll help you think about how to make
the most of your workplace, and what to do when it’s time to move on, whether
it’s your choice or not. If you come dressed in your interview clothes,
and/or bring resumes and cover letters, Reeves will offer an on- the-spot
critique and answer any questions you have about the job-hunting process and
how to present yourself professionally.
Admission
is free and open to all. Seating is first come, first served.
