Santa Monica, California – Celebrate sustainable Santa Monica
with the presentation of the third annual Green Prize for Sustainable
Literature Awards on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the Main Library
MLK Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard. Join us for the
announcement of the winning books, appearances by winning authors, video
acceptances from honorees Jane Goodall and Ed Begley, Jr., and locally grown
refreshments from the Santa Monica Farmers Market.
Prizes will be awarded in the
categories of Adult Nonfiction, Adult Reference, Adult Local Impact, Youth
Fiction, Youth Nonfiction, Youth Picture Book, and Youth Reference; there will
also be one adult and two youth honor books announced. This year’s Green
Prize Pioneer Award, created to honor a writer that has paved the way for
discourse on sustainable issues, will go to Jane Goodall, primatologist,
anthropologist, and founder of The Jane Goodall Institute.
The Green Prize encourages and
commends authors, illustrators, and publishers who broaden
public awareness of sustainability, which is defined by City of Santa Monica
Sustainable City Plan as “meeting current needs – environmental, economic and
social – without compromising the ability of future generations to do the
same.”
